Happy Friday, everyone! I keep getting those furniture store magazines in the mail (even though I definitely did not sign up to receive them), but they actually reminded me to write this post.
I’m sharing my furniture favorites along with a few home decor picks I enjoy in my own house.
I’ve had my own place for only a couple of years so I’m still finding my aesthetic and gathering a few other pieces for my home. I lived with roommates throughout college so I never really had much opportunity to freely purchase things for my house. However, after graduating and living by myself, there are certain items I’ve come to love. I’m a big believer that if you decorate your home and make it an inspiring environment, you’ll see a positive change in your mental outlook.
My decor style tends to be comfortable, but clean and slightly modern. I’m a big fan of white, but with a dog and life in general, it’s difficult to keep certain softer surfaces looking crisp and bright. Instead, I’ve stuck with white acrylic for hard surfaces like the dining table, dresser (and my nightstand).
For softer surfaces like my couch, rugs and curtains, I’ve chosen mainly gray and navy.
I also love mixing those colors with clear acrylic, such as the dining chairs. The cool thing about that material is that they appear as though they take up less space than they actually do. It’s almost an interior design optical illusion. If you have a smaller place, such as I did in NYC, then it’s a big plus to make your space appear less crowded.
As I’ve developed my decor style, I’ve come to find that my favorite stores are ZGallerie, West Elm and CB2. However, I also love places like One Kings Lane, Overstock, Lulu & Georgia and Shop the Manor. My bed is actually from One Kings Lane. If you need affordable furniture and home decor, visit their website!
I’ve invested a bit more in items like my couch and dining table since I know I’ll have those for years to come.
One quick thing about the floor mirror (#11): It’s no longer available, but they have several other similar ones on their website. A floor mirror was at the top of my list when I initially moved to NYC because it not only gives you the opportunity to thoroughly check out your outfit, but it also makes the space appear bigger. They have a smaller version that can hang on the wall if you’d prefer that.
I also love the Mongolian pillow (#5). I have it in both sizes and also in white. The only downside is that when I purchased them, I wasn’t aware/wasn’t as concerned with being vegan and animal-friendly. As a result, I’m not entirely sure the pillow is faux. I think it’s made of lamb fur, but luckily I don’t believe the lambs are killed. I’m going to do the research and if they are, the pillows are 100% heading out the door. I still don’t know why I didn’t think about it when I purchased them. It’s incredible how much my thought process has changed about certain purchases since I’ve altered my diet. Anything else in my house that resembles fur is definitely faux so this pillow was an unfortunate slip-up on my part.
Also, the candle sconce (#9) I’ve linked is not the exact same one since I purchased it about 3 years ago, but it’s similar. The one I have is still from ZGallerie, but it’s two or three times the size. It came in a brownish, gold color, which, as you can guess, did not go with the rest of my decor. So, I spray painted it a glossy black. It’s held up well throughout multiple moves. Quick tip: if you don’t like the color of a home decor item, but you love the style, just give it a coat or two of paint! I actually got the idea to purchase a candle sconce after watching The Bachelorette (it may have been Ali’s season). One of the rooms in the mansion had an entire wall of these candle scones, which made the atmosphere seem so cozy and romantic. I use flameless tea lights to place in it.
While this certainly isn’t all of my furniture/home decor, I wanted to share some of the pieces I purchased first when moving to my own apartment. I hope it provides some inspiration if you’re looking to start your own furniture collection or are wanting to redecorate!
Let me know if you guys have any favorite furniture/home decor stores! I’d love to know what you’re loving in your house!
